"The Girl in White Gloves." This was the phrase Time magazine used to describe Grace in 1955.
From Grace Kelly Style: "At the time, white gloves were commonly worn by well-bred girls and women, following the dictates of arbiters of etiquette such as Emily Post, who decreed that women should always wear gloves in church, on city streets, in a restaurant or theatre, and to go to lunch, a formal dinner or a dance.
White gloves, prime and noticeable, were not common in Hollywood studios, however: the film director Fred Zinnemann remembered how Grace Kelly’s appearance had startled him four years earlier: ‘Nobody came to see me before wearing white gloves.’
Grace’s white gloves became a piece of her signature look. She owned many pairs of different lengths to suit each occasion. While it’s known that Grace was very economical with clothing, often wearing the same pieces over and over again, apparently gloves were her weakness. During the filming of To Catch a Thief, Grace and Edith Head went shopping at Hermès in Paris. Grace indulged herself so much that she had to send for more money. ;)
